The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering whether to allow a popular generic drug, Viagra, to be sold without a prescription. The move is part of a broader effort by the FDA to curb the marketing of prescription drugs that are widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. The move could potentially help to protect health care professionals from potentially life-threatening illnesses such as cancer.
Viagra was approved in 1998 by the FDA in an effort to treat the problem of erectile dysfunction. Since then, a growing number of Americans have taken Viagra and tried other similar medications to try to regain their erection.
In addition to the FDA decision, the drug industry is also weighing its possible impact on the health of consumers. The FDA is also considering whether to approve a generic version of Viagra, the generic version of the drug marketed under the name Levitra. Levitra, which is manufactured by Bayer, has been in short supply since December 2020, and the FDA has yet to rule on whether it can be sold without a prescription in the coming weeks.
A spokesman for the company said the company is working on the FDA's review process to determine the best course of action for patients.
"We believe that the FDA has a responsibility to evaluate the best course of action in a patient's circumstances and to decide whether the company is comfortable with the use of the drug," said Mark C. Clark, vice president, product management at Pfizer. "We are committed to working closely with our physicians and other health care providers to determine whether or not Viagra is appropriate for patients."
Viagra is available in pill form and can be prescribed by prescription only.
In December 2023, Pfizer announced that it would begin marketing Viagra in the U. S. with the brand name of Cialis. Currently, it has about 7 million U. customers and is one of the most widely-used drugs in men's health. Cialis, the brand name for the drug, was first approved by the FDA in 1996.
According to the American Medical Association, about 10 million American men have used the drug, but it is often used off-label for other conditions as well.
The FDA's decision to approve Viagra has not stopped other companies from marketing the drug in the U. Viagra has been available online for years. For example, Pfizer's drug, Viagra Connect, is available without a prescription at no cost for about 30 years.
Viagra Connect, which is sold by Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is an erectile dysfunction treatment for patients who do not respond well to sildenafil citrate. However, it is approved for use only by men over the age of 18.
A GSK spokesperson said, "GSK's current marketing plan for Viagra is to continue the use of the brand name medication, Cialis, to treat erectile dysfunction for as long as the patients continue using the brand-name medication."
According to the American Medical Association, about 10 million Americans have used Viagra since 1998 and its use has increased to approximately 40 million per year.
However, the FDA has not approved the use of Viagra in more than 10 percent of patients who take the drug. GSK, however, said in a statement that its product is still being tested and that the FDA "continues to evaluate and approve Viagra products for use by men of all ages."
The FDA did not respond to a request for comment.

It should continue its studies on this issue, as well as other issues.
Pfizer Inc. has been investigating the issue of Viagra for a long time. In 2020, the company submitted a public notice to the FDA of a possible generic version of Viagra. The FDA had not approved the drug for sales in the U.Background:There is a paucity of effective, affordable, and reliable treatments for erectile dysfunction. TheViagra® trial has been very successful in a number of men with erectile dysfunction who have not responded to sildenafil or placebo therapy. The trial has not provided a cure for this problem, but it has improved the quality of life of men. A number of clinical studies have evaluated the efficacy and safety of Viagra in treating erectile dysfunction in men with erectile dysfunction. The treatment was effective in some men but was not as effective in other men. We aimed to provide a practical, safe, and inexpensive treatment for erectile dysfunction in men with erectile dysfunction. The trial design was designed in accordance with the principles of the International Society of Sexual Medicine and the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction (IIEF-5) ().
Methods:This clinical trial was conducted at the Department of Urology and Sexual Medicine, Hospital of Saint-Germain, University of Saint-Just, Saint-Martin, in France. The protocol has been approved by the institutional review board of Saint-Just, Saint-Martin, under the supervision of the ethics committees. Patients who met the inclusion criteria and who were willing to participate in the study were selected. Patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: sildenafil (n=10), sildenafil with anhydrous hydroxylation (n=10), and placebo (n=10). The sildenafil group was randomized to receive either 1 mg sildenafil/day (n=10), sildenafil with anhydrous hydroxylation (n=10), or placebo (n=10). Patients received an average of 6.4 months of treatment with sildenafil or placebo.
Results:The median age of the participants was 68 years. They were more likely to be female and to have a mean score of 8.5 compared with patients with a baseline value of 6.7. The median International Index of Erectile Function-5 score was 0.7 and 4.9. The mean International Prostate Symptom Score was 9.1 and the mean International Index of Erectile Function-5 score was 0.5. The patients who took sildenafil and the placebo group were also more likely to have a baseline value of 5.8 compared with the patients who took the placebo. The patients taking sildenafil and the placebo group were more likely to have a baseline value of 4.7 compared with the patients who took the placebo.
Conclusion:The main effect of the treatment was a decrease in the mean International Prostate Symptom Score and a decrease in the mean International Index of Erectile Function-5 score. The mean International Prostate Symptom Score was not significantly different between the sildenafil group and the placebo group. The decrease in the mean International Prostate Symptom Score was more evident in the sildenafil group compared with the placebo group. The reduction in the mean International Index of Erectile Function-5 score was not significant in the sildenafil group.
